Caring for jewellery

General aftercare

General advice

Ideally don’t wear pieces during physical activities – Gym work, gardening, heavy lifting

Moving, mechanical elements of a piece of jewellery do wear – clasps, buckles, earring backs and moveable drop earrings. Check these from time to time.

Rings

While wearing a ring – scuffs and bumps are normal. Your hands come into contact with all sorts of physical objects. However, in almost all cases we can re-polish or refurbish your ring back to its former glory.

With some claw set gemstones rings accidents happen from time to time and you may pull a claw without even realising it. The more claws you have the more possibility there is for this to happen.

Aquamarines, Emeralds, Pearls, Opals, Turquoise and Tanzanite.

These gemstones are particularly delicate and require specific care. They are softer than many gemstones, so be careful when wearing.

Avoid hairspray, makeup, perfume and water when wearing Emeralds, Pearls Opals and Turquoise. These stones are porous and take in water and/or chemicals with adverse effect.

Pearls are generally strung onto natural silk. Chemicals can eat away at the silk and they may need restringing more often.

Caring for Pearl jewellery

Pearls are resilient and meant to be worn, but they are also delicate and require proper care.

Pearls are organic gemstones that are vulnerable to acid, alkaline and extremes of humidity. Avoid letting them come in contact with cosmetics, hairspray or perfume. A pearl’s lustre can also be harmed by perspiration. To prevent this, wipe your pearls with a gentle soft cloth after wearing them.

Most pearl necklaces are strung on silk thread for strength. However, if that string stretches or loosens it may break suddenly. We recommend that you have your pearls restrung every year.

Be careful not to dip pearl strands into water, it can weaken the silk thread.
